Newport, Rhode Island

Snapshot: quaint New England town where you can smell the salt air of the ocean, feel a breeze but be warmer than Boston or the Cape, and join hoards of tourists walking around eating ice cream

My Authority: admittedly minimal... I visited during several day trips in summers growing up; More recently, in April 2013 for engagement photos with my husband :)

You should: surf at second beach, view the monstrous mega mansions from your preferred means of travel (biking or boating would be the most fun!) eat dinner at 41 North (if it's a fancy night), and finish the night at one of the pubs on the main strip, which will probably have live music if it's a weekend in the summer

You should not: underestimate the traffic, especially on weekends in the summer; forget about cheaper hotel options in neighboring towns

Best for: an overnight in June or August (July seems to be extra-packed.) Fun for families, romantic weekends or even a bachelor(ette) party weekend!

** Have stuff to add?? I know there are more great things to say about Newport, but I don't know it very well... feel free to comment! :)
